In my first couple of months being a Commissioner I have traveled to Annapolis, spoken with US Senators Coons and Carper, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden and other officials on a wide range of topics.
However, budget season quickly approaches and I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and working with both Mayors, the Council and Commission to come up with a budget that addresses our roads, police building and services while giving our residents a budget they can live with.
I'll be attending meetings pertaining to the Walnut Street project and the tax differential in the coming weeks. I'll have updates about both soon!
I look forward to hearing from you!
Cheers-

My Personal Information
The first place I called home was on Connelly Mill Road, but my family moved to Chestnut Street later that year in a house my mom still calls home. My first job was planting watermelons on King Farm just outside of Delmar. As a 15 year old I was hired by the City of Salisbury to begin my education in infrastructure and learn the importance of public works. I began by spraying weeds, but transferred to the Traffic Department.
I graduated from Delmar High in 1991 and left for college. After 14 years away from Delmar I moved home in late 2005. During my 14 years outside of the area I worked in Human Resources as an Interviewer/Recruiter and then as a boxing writer, which required me to cover stories and fights from Los Angeles to New York to Puerto Rico. When I moved back to the area I went to work for the Municipal Wastewater plant in Salisbury, before transferring to the Municipal Water Plant.
In 2008 I bought a home on Pine Street where I live with my wife, Connie and three children; Zane 14, Jack 2 and little Henry who is 1. At present I am finishing a degree in Marketing via online classes through the University of Maryland system (UMUC).
Infrastructure Our Roads and Police are Priorities!
slide 1
Walnut Street. We have earmarked funds in the budget for three years in a row and the work has not even started. It is a priority for me to get this DONE!
slide 2
This is directly in front of the new Town Hall (old Bank of Delmar).building. Having this sort of disrepair in one of the most important areas of town in terms of foot traffic, business development and local government is not only an embarrassment to the citizens, but it also sends the wrong signal to those that would locate a business to our town.
slide 3
There are several places in town where the sidewalk just gives way to nature. Our sidewalks have been neglected for too long.
slide 4
The Lecates Building is located across from the new Town Hall and is a prominent structure that has seen better days. Notice how the crossbar is loose and looks dangerous. There is still a pane of glass on the bottom left. Things like this should be found and taken care of immediately!
slide 5
This is the back part of the Lecates Building. While I am glad that there is a new owner of the property, I believe it is important for the town to partner with the owner to get this property back to being a positive for the town. Its current condition is unacceptible.
The issue of roads and infrastructure became my calling card during the campaign. As I approach my first budget it is still on my mind. My number one priority in this arena is to finally push through the Walnut Street project that has been stalled for several years. On my first day as Commissioner I took a tour of the Delmar Police Department. Our Officers are asked to do an incredibly difficult job in a space they have simply overgrown. The current police department was completed in 1979, when the town population was close to 2,180 (1980 census count total for both towns). As of the 2010 census the Maryland side alone numbered 3,003. When you add in the Delaware side (which the Officers also serve) the total population is over 4,600! There are plans underway to move the current police station into the old town hall. I agree with this course of action and will be supporting this move in both voice and at budget time.

Doing Business
Delmar is on the Phone!
Networking is an important part of the Town Commissioner job. It is imperative that Delmar representatives cultivate working relationships with people on the County, State and Federal levels. As a Commissioner I have already spoken to US Senators Coons and Carper as well as Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden and Governor Markell. On the local level I have expressed concerns to Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt about our appointed school board, the tax differential and the spending priorities of our county.
In the picture below Mayor Anderton and I are speaking with Governor Markell about Delmar.
Delmar is Open for Business!
I have spoken to several business people who either have brought jobs to Delmar or are interested in investing in our town. We have an ideal location for business. If you've driven in either direction on Route 13 lately then you know just how much more traffic this area gets than even 5 years ago. Along with traffic comes an opportunity for our town to grow commercial opportunities on the properties around route 13. Much of the land on Route 13 on both sides of the line is undeveloped. We're at a crucial moment in time for Delmar. Right now we get to decide exactly what kind of town our children will inherit from us. If we grow slow and smart, we can develop a town that maximizes our potential for commerical development, while still retaining the small town that I grew up in and many saw when they chose to move here. It is imperative that we value the heart and soul of this town while we grow. Growth for growths sake can lead to abandoned properties, over-extended infrastructure and a change in the character of the town that I will not abide. That said, growth on Route 13 is inevitable. Let us do it right the first time!
